A widely accepted notion in entrepreneurial circles is that the way to start and grow a thriving business is to come up with a great “idea”, write a compelling business plan, raise capital from angels or VCs, flawlessly execute the plan, and (Voila!) get rich! More often, a would-be entrepreneur stumbles across something that appears to hold market potential. Amazingly, sometimes, a customer then agrees to buy! A key question such entrepreneurs then face, is “What should we do next? Should we raise some capital? Hunker down and conduct some marketing research? Or just start selling?”

By examining the story of one such start-up, John’s session will explore the implications of these questions for entrepreneurs and business angels seeking to fund new ventures. He’ll separate myth from the surprising reality in the new venture funding arena and propose a better and more hospitable way forward for funding innovation wherever it occurs.
